Details:
Do you value longevity
of quality fleece characteristics in your adult alpacas? We believe this is an
extremely valuable trait, and Montero retained his superior fleece fineness and
shear weight far into adulthood. It wasn't until after his 10th shearing that he
started to exhibit a stronger fiber diameter - even then just into
"intermediate" fineness (see below). This is remarkable if you have ever
compared adult breeding male histograms, year by year! Even today, his fleece
has a pleasing handle and is still a very viable product.
The following values are used by the Canadian and American fleece grading
systems.
< 20 microns - Ultra Fine
20-22.9 - Super Fine
23.0-25.9 - Fine
26.0-28.9 - Medium
29.0-32.0 - Intermediate
32.1-35.0 - Coarse
Using EABS Fiber
Standards for Sires, Montero remained in the projected best 5% of animals in the
national herd for FD & CV at his 7th shearing.
In addition to his notable fleece, Don Montero's a really handsome male with
that beautiful "Peruvian" head, short muzzle, and full topknot. He's got heavy
bone, and solid, muscular conformation. He's also got a very even temperament,
is a breeze to handle, and we're seeing this easy-going personality passed down
to cria after cria, no matter how amiable (or not) the dam is!
Montero's dam is Peruvian Sollocata, imported and owned by Pacific Crest
Alpacas. His sire is Ppperuvian Auzengate, imported from the Allianza region in
Peru, and sold soon after to Australia for a very high dollar. Auzengate is a
notable sire in Australia, leaving just a very few of his line here in the
United States.
